Garrison Commander Joins Celebration Marking the Start of New Homes for Officers and Their Families
LEAVENWORTH, KS / ACCESS Newswire / June 17, 2026 / Brand new housing is coming to one of the Army’s oldest installations. On Tuesday, June 16th, The Michaels Organization, joined by Ft. Leavenworth’s Garrison Commander, Col. Todd Sunday, held a ceremonial groundbreaking for 48 new townhomes. The new homes will replace outdated legacy housing first built in 1959. The neighborhood, to be called New Kansa, is part of Frontier Heritage Communities, the privatized family housing on post owned and managed by The Michaels Organization.
“Today we officially recognize a project that will make the best hometown in the Army even better,” said Col. Todd Sunday, Fort Leavenworth Garrison Commander. “We are here to break ground on the New Kansa housing area and celebrate the collaboration between the Army and the Michaels Organization that has made this day happen. This new neighborhood will provide quality homes for thousands of future military families. These homes represent how much this nation, and this Army cares about our service members and their families, and their quality of life.”
The new two-story townhomes, designed by leading architectural firm Urban Practice, will feature modern, spacious layouts and high-end finishes. The homes offer upscale living in a vibrant, modern, family-friendly neighborhood.

“We’re grateful for the Army’s continued partnership and the opportunity to develop these homes,” said Quinlan Melvin, Michaels’ Vice President of Investment Management. “Our goal is straightforward; build housing that actually works for military families, so the people living here can focus on what they do without worrying about where they come home to.”
The four-bedroom homes span over 2,000 square feet across two floors, with open floor plans on the main level and plenty of closet and storage space throughout. Each home includes a private, fenced backyard and patio off the main living area. Built with long-term sustainability in mind, the homes feature two-zone HVAC systems, energy-efficient appliances, recessed LED lighting, and access to EV charging in the parking lot.
“We are very excited that this new housing is designed specifically for the needs of military families, and it comes with our commitment of service and care,” said Adam Hay, Michaels’ Vice President of Management. “Residents will be able to depend on us for fast and reliable maintenance, for well-kept neighborhoods with desirable amenities, and activities that help military families feel part of a unique community, making friends and making memories.”
The $31 million development is financed through a $500 million development initiative across the Michaels Military Housing portfolio. This initiative funds new construction and renovation efforts at multiple Army installations, including Fort Belvoir, Fort Benning, Fort Leavenworth, and others. Earlier this year, groundbreakings for new homes were held at Fort Belvoir, Va., and Fort Benning, Ga. At Fort Leavenworth, substantial renovations are also underway on the installation’s historic homes, which are among the oldest in the Army’s housing portfolio.
Other members of the development team include General Contractor CBG Building Company, and engineering firms CHA, Holstein White, and Onyx. Michaels Management will provide property management services. Construction is expected to be completed in December 2027.
